A healthy skin barrier can keep you safe from irritation and sensitivities. A weak or damaged skin barrier won’t provide you with the protection you need. This is the cause of sensitive skin. The skin barrier can be the best defense against UV radiation, pollution harmful chemicals, and environmental stressors.

A weak barrier may be caused by age and skin color (the more sensitive to irritation, redness etc.).) or environmental triggers. The ability to maintain hydration and skin elasticity are the result of a strong skin barrier. If your skin can’t keep its balance and elasticity, you will see dry, dull skin. A weak skin barrier could also mean that chemicals can get through more easily to the skin, which can cause irritation. This is often evident in people complaining that certain products cause irritation, redness or stinging to their skin. So what can you do?
Keep your routine for skincare simple. Check out the products you are using. Get rid of alcohol or witch hazel based products. Do not use detergents for your cleaning routine. Avoid the use of harsh chemicals of any kind.
*No scrubs or cleansing tools or on top of cleansing (i.e. brushes, cleansing cloths). Make sure you’ve got an easy cleanser in case you must apply it. Simply put, most of these tools are hard. The face needs to be cleansed gentle all the time.
You should look for ingredients that contain the linoleic acid (Omega 6 fatty acid). This ingredient isn’t produced in nature and need to obtain it from food or via the application of it to the skin. It’s extremely moisturizing and strengthens the barrier of skin. Look for oils like Hemp Seed Oil, Sunflower, Safflower in your products.
*No detergents! (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate). They can dry and irritate the skin’s surface. Acids that remove the skin’s top layer must be avoided. Colorants, fragrances and harsh chemicals may be a contributing factor to the weakness of skin.
*Very Hot water should be avoided in showering and bathing. It could cause the loss of natural oils.
*Play defense! Protect skin from stressors, such as damage caused by free radicals. Find antioxidants, natural extracts such as Green Tea, Vitamins (A,C and E) and nutrient-rich oils like pomegranate within your products. These are great for promoting a healthy skin barrier.
*Stress. Consider how you handle stress. Stress levels that are excessive can hinder your ability to heal.
*Diet. Essential acid fatty acids (Omegas) are beneficial. They are beneficial for skin and help retain water. The healthier diet you eat, the stronger your skin.
*Sunscreen. It’s important to use it. It’s one of the best ways to protect the skin barrier.
